Booze Beats Exercise For Living Past 90

When it comes to a long life, there's nothing better than booze according to a new study.

University of California neurologist Claudia Kawas studied more than 1,700 nonagenarians (people over ninety for those without a word-of-the-day calendar) to look at the impacts of daily habits on longevity. Kawas was interested in finding out how daily habits can extend, or shorten a person's life.

Researchers were stunned to find that subjects who drank about two glasses of beer or wine per day were 18 percent less likely to experience a premature death the study says. Those who exercised 15 to 45 minutes per day cut the same risk by only 11 percent.

Several other factors were found to affect a person's longevity. Subjects who were slightly overweight, but not obese, cut their odds of an early death by 3 percent. People who kept up with a daily hobby at least two hours a day were 21 percent less likely to die early, while those who drank at least two cups of coffee a day cut their risk by 10 percent.

Researchers caution that further study is needed to determine how habits impact how long a person lives beyond their genetic makeup.

So while an apple a day might keep the doctor away, if you ferment that apple into some cider, you might be eating that fruit well into your nineties.
