South Carolina Cop Gets 19 To 24 Years In Prison For Shooting Unarmed Man

A white former police officer in South Carolina is being sentenced to 19 to 24 years in prison for the deadly shooting of an unarmed black man.  A U.S. district judge ruled that former North Charleston officer Michael Slager committed second-degree murder and obstruction of justice before handing down the sentence.

Slager earlier pleaded not guilty to murder, but in a federal case in May pleaded guilty to violating the civil rights of 50-year-old Walter Scott.

Slager pulled Scott over for a broken brake light in April 2015.  A cellphone video caught Slager shooting Scott as he fled from the officer.
